The Congress bagged the posts of president and vice-president of the Shahpur and Surpur taluk panchayats in Yadgir district in the elections held on Saturday.

The Congress now has a clear majority in both the taluk panchayats. Party candidates won the top posts in unanimous elections.

The BJP, which is in a minority in both taluk panchayats, did not field candidates.

Shivubai Shivamahant Chandapur (Ukkinal) and Sharanappa Desai (Kolur) were elected president and vice-president of Shahpur Taluk Panchayat, while Sabamma Gopanna Desai (Devargonal) and Annapurna Patil (Kembhavi) were elected president and vice-president of the Surpur Taluk Panchayat.

The president’s post in the Shahpur Taluk Panchayat was reserved for General (Women), and the vice-president’s post for the General category. The president’s post in the Surpur Taluk Panchayat was reserved for Scheduled Tribes and the vice-president’s for General (Women).

Majority

In the 25-member Shahpur Taluk Panchayat, the Congress has 12 members, followed by 10 from the BJP, 2 from the Janata Dal (Secular), and one Independent. In Surpur, of the total 30 seats, the Congress has 18 members and BJP 12.

Assistant Commissioner of the Yadgir Subdivision B.P. Vijay conducted the elections.
