MYSORE: Rajamma of the Congress and K. Mari Gowda of the All India Progressive Janata Dal (AIPJD) were elected President and Vice-President, respectively, of the Mysore Zilla Panchayat on Friday.
As expected, the Congress and the AIPJD, which have an alliance to assume control in the hung zilla panchayat, shared the two posts. Ms. Rajamma and Mr. Mari Gowda will have a 20-month tenure.
Ms. Rajamma, 47, is a second-time zilla panchayat member from Tippur constituency in K.R. Nagar taluk. Her election was a forgone conclusion as the post of President was reserved for a candidate from the Scheduled Tribes. No other candidate filed nomination papers for the post. Ms. Rajamma's candidature was proposed by Congress member Channabasappa.
However, the election for the post of Vice-President witnessed a fight between Mr. Mari Gowda and Janata Dal (Secular) candidate Kunne Gowda. Mr. Mari Gowda polled 33 votes against 13 by Mr. Kunne Gowda.
The post was reserved for a candidate from the Backward Classes. Mr. Mari Gowda is a close aide of the former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
He represents Beerihundi constituency of Mysore taluk in the zilla panchayat.
In the 46-member zilla panchayat, the Congress has 18 members, followed by AIPJD 15.
The Janata Dal (S) has 11. There are two BJP members.
Ms. Rajamma told presspersons that drinking water supply, roads, and primary education will receive priority during her administration.
She thanked Congress leader H. Vishwanath and Mr. Siddaramaiah of the AIPJD for their support.
Mr. Mari Gowda promised to usher in comprehensive development of the region.
