State BJP president K.S. Eshwarappa said here on Saturday that Congress leaders should make it clear why they were opposed to the probe by the Lokayukta into the “illegal” mining.
Talking to presspersons here on Saturday, he said that going by the manner in which they were demanding a CBI probe, it was clear that their intention was to destabilise the BJP Government.
He said the Congress seemed to think that a CBI probe would come in handy for it to destabilise the State Government, as the agency was under the control of the Centre.
Mr. Eshwarappa alleged that the main reason for the Congress leaders to demand CBI probe was that they were also involved in “illegal” mining and that they would get indicted if the Lokayukta continued its probe.
He said: “There is no question of agreeing to a CBI probe into mining as we are convinced that the ulterior motive of the Congress is to create needless constitutional problem”.
Mr. Eshwarappa came down on the Congress padayatra, which is under way.
“Going by their apprehensions, it is clear that they are bent upon creating a law and order problem during the padayatra and put the blame on the Chief Minister,” he said and added that the Government had already taken steps to ensure safety to the padayatris.
Referring to his reported statement that the BJP was not averse to any tie-up with the Janata Dal (S), he clarified that there was no need for the BJP to have an alliance with any party as it was certain to remain in power for the next three years.
Mr. Eshwarappa, however, said that the BJP would welcome the Janata Dal (S) if it sought a tie-up.
He said this offer was not confined to Karnataka alone.
He expressed concern over what he called the “indecent” and “uncultured” language used against him by the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Siddaramaiah, during the padayatra.
“I can use worse language, but I was groomed in a cultured party,” he said.
To a question, he justified the padayatra being undertaken by the Reddy brothers and B. Sriramulu in parts of Bellary district and said there was nothing wrong as it was necessary for them to reply to the tirade by the Congress leaders.
