Congress activists staged a demonstration at Sirguppa town on Wednesday protesting against Nagarathnamma who won on a Congress ticket from Halekote constituency in Sirguppa taluk and later joined the BJP.

Hundreds of Congress workers, including youth Congress activists from Bellary, took out a procession on the main streets of the Sirguppa town and burnt effigies of Ms. Nagarathnamma and here husband Dodda Hanumanthappa.

Condemning the BJP leaders for “luring” Opposition members to their side to retain power, Congress leaders, including Anjaneyalu, president of the district Youth Congress, and B.M. Nagaraj, Sirguppa Block Congress president, described it an affront to democracy.

They said a petition would also be submitted to the Election Commission to invoke the provisions of Anti-Defection law and initiate steps to disqualify Ms. Nagarathnamma.
