Bandh on NH 13, 17, 48, 63 and 206 on January 23

Udupi: Visvesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math has urged the Government to concrete all National and State Highways in the three coastal districts of Udupi, Dakshina Kananda and Uttara Kannada. The Save National Highway 17 Committee has called for a bandh on National Highways 13, 17, 48, 63 and 206 in the coastal districts from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on January 23. Releasing a booklet brought out by the committee here on Wednesday on the bad condition of National and State Highways in the coastal districts, the seer said that people and voluntary organisations should monitor the condition of roads and highways, as they would impact not only them, but also trade and commerce.

He said that politicians and bureaucrats always blamed heavy rainfall for the condition of roads in the districts. However, when they started taking up repair, it was already time for another monsoon, he said. Corruption among officials had compounded the problem, he alleged.

Vidyaprasanna Tirtha Swamiji of Subramanya Math said that the Government had announced Rs. 115 crore for the repair of the Shiradi Ghat road, but no further action had been taken.
