Madikeri: The Kodagu Asthitva Horata Samiti on Wednesday expressed concern over the meeting of a group of environmentalists with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during his visit to Nagarahole National Park.

According to information gathered by The Hindu, the environmentalists met Mr. Gandhi on Wednesday. However, what transpired in the meeting, which lasted for 15 minutes, was not known as journalists were not allowed to attend the meeting, a source said.

The samiti feared that environmentalists could have urged Mr. Gandhi to expedite the processes of creating the Greater Talacauvery Wildlife Sanctuary and declare Nagarahole National Park, now named after the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, as a heritage spot, according to a source in the samiti here.

The samiti said that people in Kodagu were against the move to carve out the Greater Talacauvery Wildlife Sanctuary by bringing together the three wildlife sanctuaries in the district — Brahmagiri, Talacauvery and Pushpagiri.
