Basavaraj Horatti, MLC and former Minister, has said that not many students are interested in taking up research in science and technology, where there is huge scope for growth.

He was inaugurating the activities of the Students Union of the K.E. Board's Pre-University College at Malamaddi here on Saturday.

He said that parents want their children only to take up professional courses and become either doctor or engineer.

“Because of this attitude the country now lacks scientists of the likes of C.V. Raman, C.N.R. Rao, Homi Bhabha, Srinivasa Ramanujan and A.P.J. Abdul Kalam,” he said.

He underscored the need for students to participate in extra-curricular activities, including physical education. He said physical development was equally important as expansion of one's mental horizons.

Advice

Parents should focus on ensuring overall personality development of their children, he said.

Mr. Horatti was felicitated on the occasion by the college management.

K.E. Board's executive committee member Arun Nadgir presided over the function. Executive committee member Kadkol, principal D.S. Rajpurohit, and students union president Ramesh Mang, vice-presidents Hemalata Karigar and G.C. Kulkarni, and general secretary V.V. Rati were present.
