PANAJI: Though HIV infection is now prevalent in all parts of Goa, a majority of cases are being reported from its four coastal taluks.
According to a report prepared by Goa State AIDS Control Society, of the estimated 16,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in Goa, the coastal taluk of Salcete (17.1 per cent), Mormugao (16.4 per cent), Tiswadi (11.5 per cent) and Bardez (15.8 per cent) have reported more number of cases.
The number of HIV cases detected in Goa from the year 1987 to September 2009 is 12,432.
The number of AIDS cases filed with the Goa State AIDS Control Society during August is 1,196. The number of AIDS-related deaths is 637 up to September 2009.
As much as 87 per cent of the cases detected in Goa till September 2009 are in the 15-49 age group.
