CHIKMAGALUR: A second division clerk working in the office of the Assistant Conservator of Forests in Tarikere has been arrested by the police on charges of embezzling government funds to the tune of Rs. 1.29 crore.

H.N. Nagaraj, Superintendent of Police, told presspersons here on Wednesday that acting on a complaint from the Assistant Conservator of Forests, the police arrested N. Mohan Kumar at the KSRTC bus-stand in Bangalore on January 12.

False bills

During questioning, Mohan Kumar is said to have reportedly revealed that he had allegedly misappropriated Rs. 1.29 crore from the government sub-treasury in Tarikere by preparing several false bills from August 2008 and forging his officers’ signatures.

The funds were deposited in his wife’s account in Bhadravati.

Mr. Nagaraj said Rs. 1 lakh in cash and gold ornaments worth Rs. 90,000 were recovered from the accused.

He said a car purchased in his mother’s name has been seized.

In addition to this, Mohan Kumar had bought two sites in Shimoga for Rs.10 lakh and was constructing a house worth Rs.13 lakh on one of them.
