There was still a lot of cleaning up to be done at the K.R. Market, one of the city’s oldest markets, even on the eighth spring cleaning drive taken up by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
On Monday, employees and artistes of Zee TV Kannada and NCC students of BBMP’s Kasturba College took to cleaning the market’s flower and vegetable sections.
Claiming that there was an improvement to the extent of 60 per cent, Mayor B.S. Sathyanarayana conceded that cleanliness was still a far cry in some sections of the market. He attributed this to the new contractor, who has been entrusted with the cleaning of the market by the BBMP.
He added that the BBMP would engage with the IT, BT companies and several organisations to take up awareness campaign against littering and indiscriminate waste disposal in the city. The BBMP would draw up a plan for cleaning drives to be taken up in other markets.
He noted that the area around the market police station was unclean. Though the police personnel were aware of the market cleaning drives each week, they were failing to dispose of waste responsibly. He directed the health officials to levy a penalty and ensure that such indiscriminate littering and dumping did not recur.
