HASSAN: Tension prevailed at Kandali village — 6 km from here — on Monday following a a report on a TV channel that a local church had been attacked. Superintendent of Police and other officers rushed to the spot only to find that it was baseless.

Superintendent of Police K.V. Sharatchandra, who was in Kandali, said that there was no church in the village, only a prayer hall managed by Fr. George and his junior, Fr. Fredrick. Located about 100 m from the prayer hall, a cancer treatment centre had been established by the priest, he said. A window pane of the room at the centre had broken due to the heavy wind, he said. However, a TV channel claimed that the incident was actually a church attack, he said. Fr. George speaking to The Hindu from Kandali village endorsed Mr. Sharatchandra’s statement. He also said that police had given round-the-clock security to the prayer hall. He also urged the people to overreact to rumours.
