“It is wrong to portray Chhatrapati Shivaji as a communal leader. He was among the patriotic rulers in Indian history,” MLA Rahim Khan said here on Sunday.
He was speaking at the ‘Shivaji Jayanti' celebrations organised by the Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti Mahotsav Samiti here.
“Some people say that Shivaji was the leader of a particular community and that he fought against members of another community. But this perception is wrong. He was an aspiring king who wanted to expand the boundaries of his kingdom. He fought against all forces that came in the way of the expansion.
“He considered his kingdom his country and fought against other kingdoms which he thought were countries in themselves. That is why he should be considered a patriot,” Mr. Khan said. MLA Bandeppa Kashempur traced the important events of Shivaji's life.
City Municipal council president Sridevi Karanji, zilla panchayat former president Padmakar Patil, zilla panchayat members Shailendra Beldale and Prabhushetty Menga were present.
