No order:Congress leaders hoping to get party ticket at the Bhagini Samaj in Dharwad on Monday.

The Bhagini Samaj here witnessed a flurry of activity on Monday with Congress members converging on the premises to show support for their respective leaders, who were hoping to get the ticket to contest the Assembly elections from the Hubli-Dharwad (West) Assembly constituency.

Several groups of supporters, led by their aspirants, met Congress observers R.B. Timmapur, G.T. Patil, Anand Kumar, Azizulla Sharif and Nissar Ahamad.

A significant number of party workers had gathered on the premises by the time the observers arrived, two hours behind schedule.

Difficult time

The observers had a difficult time trying to control the crowd.

Repeated requests to maintain discipline fell on deaf ears as the party members raised slogans and created a disturbance. The observers were forced to collect applications amid the chaos.

More than 10 aspirants, including the former Minister S. R. More and the former Mayor I.M. Javali, Deepak Chinchore and Nagaraj Chabbi, staked claim for the ticket.

At present, the constituency is represented by Chandrakant Bellad of the BJP.

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Chabbi said he would demand the ticket. He said he had experience of serving the party in different capacities and could receive support from all factions and communities. Mr. Chinchore said that this time, the party had to select new faces to contest the Assembly elections. He said he had experience in serving the party as well as the administration in the capacity of councillor, Deputy Mayor and Leader of the Opposition.
