Efforts are under way to make the provisions of The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, more stringent if a proposal pending before the Law Department comes through. The proposal is to add a minimum imprisonment of three months, bring women offenders also under the purview of the legislation and add a clause saying that any child marriage is automatically “void.” There is also a proposal to make registration of marriages mandatory within three months of the wedding taking place.
