Nearly 215 km of the National Highways in poor condition

  • National Highway 17 severely damaged
  • Rs. 46.67 crore required for repairing NH 17 and 48

    UDUPI: Medical Education Minister V.S. Acharya has urged the Union Government to release funds immediately to repair National Highways 17 and 48.

    Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Dr. Acharya said that a report by the National Highways Department had made it clear that National Highway 17 had serious damage such as "spalling of concrete, exposure of reinforcement, severe corrosion of reinforcement and crushing of girders."

    Clear guidelines

    Since National Highway 17 had become weak, the department had made it clear that only 16-tonne single-axle vehicles and 25-tonne multi-axle vehicles could ply on it. Nearly 215 km of National Highways 17 and 48 was in poor condition, the Minister said. Concreting the Shiradi Ghat section of National Highway 48 required Rs. 100 crore. Other repairs on National Highways 17 and 48 required Rs. 46.67 crore.

    Dr. Acharya said he had brought the condition of National Highways 17 and 48 to the notice of the Union Government, but to no avail. He urged Union Minister Oscar Fernandes to put pressure on the Centre to release funds .
