Belgaum: A team of officials from the Centre on Wednesday dropped its plan to visit the site proposed for a thermal power plant near Aralikatti village in Gokak taluk following protest by villagers. The site is situated close to the Ghataprabha.

But members of the team held discussions at the Hidkal dam guesthouse, a senior official in the Hubli Electricity Supply Company said. The official said that the team members were not willing to share their views.

On learning that the Central team was scheduled to visit the village for spot inspection of the power plant site, residents of Aralikatti led by Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Narayan Gowda faction) gathered to oppose the project.

They fear that the power plant would cause ecological damage and pollute the Ghataprabha, thereby affecting agricultural activities and marine life.
