District received heavy rain in August and November 2010

A Central team, headed by Director of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Government of India, A.K. Sood, has visited various areas in the district to assess the extent of damage caused by the heavy rain between August and November 2010.

During their visit on Wednesday, the team saw the damage to bridges, roads and tanks.

The team members, during their meeting with officials of various departments, said they had collected the information required. They had personally visited affected areas and enquired about relief measures undertaken by the district administration, they said, adding that the team would submit its report very soon.

Surprisingly, the press was kept in the dark about the visit until the Information Officer issued a press release in this regard.

According to the release, Deputy Commissioner B. Shivappa put the total loss to private and public property due to rain at around Rs. 70 crore.

Bellary Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer N. Muthaiah, Assistant Commissioner R. Venkatesh, tahsildar Sashidhar Bagali, Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry Dandavati, Joint Director Agriculture Ramappa, Public Works Department Executive Engineer Ingalagi and Executive Engineer Panchayat Engineering Venkataramana were among the district-level officers present at the meeting.
