K.V. Nagaraj alias Swastik Nagaraj, allegedly one of the enforcers of jailed mining baron G. Janardhan Reddy, was remanded in the custody of the Bangalore CBI until March 8 by the Special CBI Court here on Friday. Mr. Nagaraj was arrested in a discreet operation by a team of CBI officers the previous night.

A former member of the Hospet City Municipal Council, Mr. Nagaraj along with Kharapudi Mahesh used to allegedly collect protection money, known as ‘Bellary Risk’, from mining firms who were transporting stolen ore from Bellary to the Belekeri Port in Uttara Kannada district.

Sources in the CBI also said that Kharapudi Mahesh has gone missing. A CBI team, led by Superintendent of Police A.S. Rao, is conducting search operation to nab Mahesh. The CBI also continued their raids on the offices of various auditors as well as iron ore traders and transporters.

The CBI was handed the case in October 2012 by the Supreme Court which found major lacunae in the investigation conducted by the State police.
