BANGALORE: Five former Mayors of Bangalore have petitioned the Karnataka High Court against what they alleged arbitrary and illogical decision of the State Election Commission (SEC) in cancelling the notification for the elections to the BBMP slated to be held on February 21.

The petitioners, P.R. Ramesh, J. Hutchappa, M. Ramachandra, K.H.N. Simha and M. Nagaraj, have assailed the January 29, 2009 notification of the SEC rescinding the election process.

They said elections to the BBMP were originally to be held in 2006 but it had been postponed several times. They said he SEC should not have postponed the elections without obtaining consent of the court. The case was listed for hearing on Monday before a Division Bench of Justice V. Gopala Gowda and Justice A.S. Bopanna. Since the case did not reach the court, it is slated to come up for hearing on Tuesday.
