SHIMOGA: A three-day State level camp for mentally challenged children was inaugurated here on Friday.

It is being organised jointly by Asha Kiran, a residential school for such children here, the Rotary 75th Annual Endowment Fund and the Shimoga Rotary Club in association with the local branch of the Adichunchanagiri Math.

Journalist Babu Krishnamurthy, who inaugurated the camp, said that latent talent among children could not be brought forth unless adequate opportunities were created.

He said no person could be regarded as useless “as there is no proper approach to identify and make use of his talents”. He called for efforts for the proper utilisation of natural resources for the good of society.

Mr. Krishnamurthy said that the camp being held exclusively for the mentally challenged children would go a long way in not only instilling confidence among children suffering from mental retardation but also in erasing wrong impressions about them.

He lauded the efforts being made by psychiatrist K.A. Ashok Pai and his wife Rajaji Pai in espousing the cause of mentally retarded children through their Manasa Trust.

Prasannanath Swamiji of the local branch of the Adichunchanagiri Math was the chief guest.
