Manipal: A rare heart surgery was performed on a 14-year-old boy at Kasturba Hospital here.

A press release issued by the hospital on Wednesday stated that heart surgeon Shirish Borkar performed the Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) on the boy from Halgi village in Haveri taluk.

The patient was experiencing chest pain for the past three years. He was diagnosed for familial hypercholesterolemia. He had suffered a heart attack before being admitted to the hospital.

The patient had lost four members of his family owing to heart attacks. The surgery was partly funded by Manipal University and the Manipal Foundation, through the Manipal Hrudaya Suraksha Scheme, as the patient’s family could not afford the entire expenses by itself. As the disease was found to be hereditary, the hospital decided to help the other members of his family in undergoing medical tests and treat them, if required, the release said.
