Belgaum: The bandh called by the Sangh Parivar on Thursday was near-total in Belgaum city and other parts of the district.

It passed off peacefully but for a few incidents of violence.

Normal business and trading activity was affected as shops remained closed. Educational institutions, market centres, cinema halls and commercial activities too remained closed. Attendance in government offices and banks was thin. The North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation suspended services in the city and also on inter-State and inter-district routes. Tension prevailed at Raviwarpeth after a group of boys allegedly attempted to attack BJP MLA Abhay Kumar Patil, and roughed up one of his supporters. A complaint has been registered with the Market Police Station.

Earlier, activists of the BJP, VHP and the Sangh Pariwar staged a demonstration at Dharamveer Sambhaji Chowk. Led by BJP MP Suresh C. Angadi and Mr. Patil, they took out a procession through main market areas.
