Training programmes to be held for librarians

Bangalore: Bangalore University (BU) is planning to create a network of libraries of colleges affiliated to it called “BALNET.”

BALNET will include the database of libraries of these colleges, which will be hosted by the university web server.

There will be a unified catalogue that will help teachers and students get access to any book on the list. They would be able to receive the book the next day through the library at their respective college .

The network will also take care of transfer of books from one library to another.

The university has developed the infrastructure needed to host the catalogue database of all college libraries on its website, according to a press release here on Thursday.

The university library has scheduled five training programmes of four days each at the IT Centre on Jnana Bharati Campus, to train librarians of the affiliated colleges to participate in the BALNET initiative.

The training programmes will be held from July 7 to 10 for the first batch), July 14 to 17 for the second batch, July 28 to 31 for the third batch), August 11 to 14 for the fourth batch; and from August 25 to 28 for the fifth batch.

The programme will help them gain hands-on experience and develop technical knowledge and skills in the field of library automation.

The training fee to be paid by colleges is Rs. 2,500 for a participant. The demand draft for this should reach the University Librarian, Bangalore University, by July 1.

After the training programme, the librarians will be supplied with free library software CDs that will help them create a database for their respective colleges. Once it is completed, they will be linked to BALNET.
