BJP demands CBI probe into murder

The district BJP unit has demanded the government reject the report by the Criminal Investigation Department into the rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl in Dharmasthala last year. Calling the report “incomplete” and “suspicious”, the BJP has said in a release that the government should order a CBI investigation into the crime. The report has led to suspicions of foul play and did not inspire confidence among the people of the region, added the release.

N. Narayana Shetty to be honoured

Thinker and scholar N. Narayana Shetty will be conferred the Vidhwan Kanta Rai award for his contributions to Yakshagana on November 16. The K. Kanta Rai Memorial Samiti – comprising M. Prabhakar joshi, Bhaskar Rai Kukkuvalli and K. Ravindra Rai – recommended his name for the award that comes with a citation and Rs. 10,000 purse, said a release. The award will be given to Mr. Shetty at the valedictory of the “Yakshagana Talamaddale week” at the Ravindra Kalabhavan, University college.

Raknno Writers’ Convention

More than 130 Konkani writers and editors of Konkani journals attended the Konkani Writers’ Convention organized by Konkani Weekly ‘Raknno’ on Sunday at Bishop’s House. The event, held on the occasion of the magazine’s platinum jubilee, featured sessions on the role and responsibility of editors, feature articles, being a good reader and letters to the editor, said a release. An exhibition of books and magazines was also held during the convention.

Toilet at Mangalore Sub-jail

Lioness unit of the district Lions club laid the foundation to build a sanitation block at the Mangalore sub-Jail to be used by visitors. An average of 40 to 50 visitors come to the sub-jail every day to meet their kin, while around 80 police personnel come there on duty; however, there is no toilet facility for them, said Chief Superintendent of Mangalore sub-jail Doddakamaiah, during the ceremony.
