Help centre

MYSORE: The Department of Income Tax will set up income tax help centre on the premises of the Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industries (MCCI) from March 1 to March 31 in view of the request made by the MCCI, according to a press release from Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax H.S. Raveendra Sharma. The centre will work between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. and will be manned by officers deputed by the Joint Commissioner of Income Tax Range 2, the release said. Staff Correspondent

Milk price hiked

HASSAN: The administrative council of Hassan Cooperative Milk Producer's Societies Union Ltd. (HAMUL) that met in Hassan on Wednesday decided to increase the prices of Nandini Homogenised milk by 50 paisa a litre. Accordingly the price of half litre packet has been increased from Rs. 7.75 to Rs. 8 and one litre packet from Rs. 15.50 to Rs.16. Managing director of HAMUL through a press release said prices of other milk products has not been increased. Prices of toned milk, doubled toned milk, curd and buttermilk remain the same. HASSAN: In all 102 villages have been selected under the Suvarna Gramodaya Yojana in Hassan District wherein Rs 38.70 crore would be spent on their development.

Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna directed officers to prepare a plan to develop these villages. Under this yojana, 1,000 villages in the State would be developed every year. They would get all civic amenities. Staff Correspondent

Engineer stabbed

Belgaum: Assistant Engineer of Belgaum City Corporation, Vijay Kumar Biradi, was allegedly stabbed by a group of unidentified persons near Military Mahadev temple on Congress Road on Wednesday evening.

Mr. Biradi was rushed to a private hospital in the city. He is stated to be out of danger. He suffered injuries on abdomen and left arm. According to police and relatives of Mr.Biradi, a group of youth on two motorbikes intercepted him twice while he was on his way to his home and attacked with sharp weapons. Mr. Biradi fell from his motorbike and as he shouted for help, the attackers fled the scene. The camp police have registered a case. Staff Correspondent

Investors' meet

Belgaum: The State Government has decided to go ahead with the proposed Investors' Meet on the Jnana Sangam campus of Visvesvaraya Technological University here on March 8. It may be recalled here that the Government had planned to organise the investors' meet during the Vishwa Kannada Sammelana, which was to be held from February 23 to 25. Autorickshaw drivers take out rally

HASSAN: A large number of autorickshaw drivers took out a rally in Hassan on Wednesday protesting against the Cauvery tribunal judgment.

As most of the autos were in procession for more than three hours, passengers who alighted from buses and trains were forced to walk to their destination.

Drivers also carried empty pots on top of their autorickshaws.

They presented a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner urging him to pressurise the Centre not to publish the judgment in the Gazette. Staff Correspondent

Meeting

HASSAN: Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna said he has convened a meeting of all zilla panchayat members, executive officers of taluk panchayat, MLAs, MLC, superintendent engineer and chief engineer of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) in Hassan on March 5.

The meeting will discuss aspects such as providing power connections to below poverty line families, mini water supply schemes to be taken up, programmes through SC/ST development corporation. Staff Correspondent

`Kannambadi Chalo' tomorrow

Bangalore: The Akhila Karnataka Border Struggle Committee is launching a "Kannambadi Chalo" to Krishnaraja Sagar on March 2 demanding that the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal award be rejected by the State Government.

The committee has supported the agitation by Vaijanath Patil, MLA, demanding the Centre to declare the Hyderabad-Karnataka area as a backward region under Article 371of the Constitution. Staff Reporter

Bawa deposes in Telgi case

BANGALORE: The Special Court, trying the multi-crore fake stamp paper racket cases, on Wednesday commenced the hearing of a case registered with the Upparpet police station here in August 2000.

It recorded the evidence of the then Assistant Commissioner of Police G.A. Bawa.

In the case, Abdul Kareem Telgi, the prime accused in the racket, and 23 others have been charged with possessing and selling fake stamp papers.

Air Deccan booking system

BANGALORE: Air Deccan on Wednesday announced that it had migrated to Radixx Reservation System. Previously, Air Deccan booking engine was being powered by Inter Globe Technologies. The migration to the new reservation system took place on Tuesday.

Air Deccan was the first airline in India to introduce a 100 per cent web enabled booking system that has become the largest e-commerce website in Asia, said a release.
