In a case of the fence eating the crop, the branch manager of a post office in South Division has been caught for pocketing the savings deposits of over 100 customers. It took nine years for India Post to find out the scam and a verification revealed that the accused has pocketed over Rs. 24 lakh so far.

The theft came to light when Sheikh Khajavali, a customer, wanted to withdraw Rs.1 lakh he had deposited in the savings account a few years ago. Postal officials got a shock when they noticed that though Mr. Khajavali has been issued a valid acknowledgement receipt, the amount was missing from his account. An internal inquiry by the Assistant Superintendent of South Subdivision led to who zeroed in on Bhagyalakshmmamma, branch manager of Taverekere Post Office.

When summoned for explanation, she reportedly apologised and promised to return the money.

However further verification revealed that she had not only misappropriated Mr. Kajavali’s money but also that of over 110 depositors.

Mico Layout police said though Ms. Bhagyalakshmmamma had managed to return Rs.18 lakh as of December last year, she has not coughed up the rest, forcing India Post to file a complaint for cheating and fraud.
