BJP Yuva Morcha makes appeal

BANGALORE: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Yuva Morcha has appealed to the State Government to declare Independence Day a holiday for employees of business process outsourcing (BPO) units and call centres.

BJP Yuva Morcha president Girish Mattennavar told presspersons here on Tuesday that BPOs and call centres were not giving holidays to their staff on national days such as Independence Day and Republic Day.

The State had about 425 call centres and BPO units, which employed nearly two lakh youth. But these employees were unable to attend programmes related to national days.

These units, however, remained closed for U.S. national holidays.

Mr. Mattennavar said a delegation of the BJP Yuva Morcha leaders led by him had submitted a memorandum to Labour Minister B.N. Bache Gowda and appealed to him to declare the national days, particularly Independence Day, as holidays for employees of BPOs and call centres.

‘Must follow the law’

BPOs and call centres were required to follow the law of the land where they were operating.

Hence, it was binding on these companies to follow the holiday norms of the State Government as declared under the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishment Act, Mr. Mattennavar said.

Office-bearers of a union of call centre employees were present at the press conference.
