The death of an eight-year-old-boy in an accident at Nelogal, near Haveri, sparked a protest leading to the blockade of National Highway 4 for more than two hours on Saturday.
Mahesh Obalappa (8) was crossing the road when a car hit him. Although he was rushed to the hospital, the doctors declared him brought dead. Mahesh had come with his mother to his grandmother’s house at Nelogal to participate in a ritual.
As the news of the boy’s death spread, residents of the village launched a snap stir, alleging that such accidents were recurring in the locality and urging the authorities to construct an underpass across the highway.
The protesters blocked the highway and demanded that the officials immediately address the issue. They said that unless they were given specific assurances they would not withdraw the agitation.
However, Deputy Superintendent of Police C.C. Patil and other police officials convinced the people and cleared the blockade.
