BANGALORE: The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has increased the monthly pass rates with effect from September.

Pass holders who approached the BMTC counters on Tuesday and Wednesday were surprised to note the increase in the rates. BMTC officials defended the increase stating that it was marginal. When the bus fares were increased sometime back, pass rates were not touched. The price of the one-day pass remains unchanged at Rs. 25.

The rate for black board pass has been increased from Rs. 340 to Rs. 360, that of black board and red board from Rs. 475 to Rs. 495 and that of black board, red board and Pushpak from Rs. 500 to Rs. 530. The cost of the identity card remains at Rs. 50.

BMTC officials said following the increase in regular fares, there was a phenomenal increase in the number of persons seeking daily and monthly passes. The corporation collected Rs. 2 crore on Tuesday alone by selling monthly passes, they said. The figure was Rs. 1.8 crore last month.
