G. Parameshwara, president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, said on Sunday that the Bharatiya Janata Party would be decimated in the Assembly elections. He was here to attend a meeting of party workers.

Dr. Parameshwara said the people would not forgive the massive corruption and other misdeeds of the BJP government in the last five years. “Corruption is the major achievement of the BJP. There was corruption even in the transfer of IAS and IPS officers,” he alleged.

The slogan of the Congress for this election was “clean administration and efficient leadership”. “If voted to power, the Congress will not tolerate corrupt Ministers or officials,” he said.

Dr. Parameshwara said the BJP and the Janata Dal (Secular) were holding talks to form a coalition government if there was a hung Assembly. “But the people do not want a coalition government and will give a decisive mandate to the Congress,” he said.

Communal disharmony

There had been incidents of communal disharmony and moral policing in the coastal districts under the BJP.

The Congress had taken up a ‘padayatra’ for communal harmony a few months ago.

When S.M. Krishna was in power from 1999 to 2004, nearly 11 lakh houses were built for the poor under the Ashraya scheme. But the BJP did not provide housing for the poor. “If voted to power, the Congress will give priority to the infrastructure development of Mangalore and Udupi.”

According to a survey conducted by the government, there were 30 lakh illegal BPL card holders in the State. This meant that the beneficiaries who were poor were deprived for various benefits, he said.
