Deterioration in the law and order situation in Udupi district, says Salian

  • `Atrocities against the SCs, STs, backward classes and minorities have increased'
  • `Ashraya houses have not been distributed'
  • Loans at subsidised interest rates not given to farmers and fishermen

UDUPI: Former Minister Vasanth Salian has urged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) - Janata Dal (Secular) coalition Government to stop atrocities against the weaker sections.

In a press release issued here, Mr. Salian said the last five months had seen a deterioration in the law and order situation in the State.

The incidents of atrocities against the Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, backward classes and minorities had increased.

These attacks reflected the administrative incompetence of the Janata Dal (Secular) - BJP Government.

Though the Union and the State Governments had formulated a large number of programmes for the upliftment of the backward sections, they were not being implemented, he said.

The Ashraya houses were being distributed through the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation, but for the last two years, not even one house had been distributed.

The State Government had failed to identify beneficiaries for the Yellow Card scheme under the Public Distribution System, he added.

Further, development projects such as construction of roads and bridges have been stopped, he said.

Though the State Government had announced that it would provide loans at subsidised interest rates of four per cent to farmers and fishermen, it had not taken any concrete steps to implement it, Mr. Salian said.
