GULBARGA: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to taste power for the first time in the Gulbarga Zilla Panchayat with the Janata Dal (Secular) deciding to allot the vice-president's post to the BJP.

Agricultural Marketing Minister Sharanabasappa Darshanapur, who is district in-charge Minister, told The Hindu here on Thursday that according to the agreement arrived upon at the time of the election to the post of the president and vice-president ten months ago, BJP member would be given the vice-president's post after ten months.

He said keeping this in mind, vice-president Raja Hanumappa Naik was asked to tender his resignation to president Yellappa Karikunde.

Mr. Yellappa Karikunde and Mr. Naik were elected to the zilla panchayat on the All-India Progressive Janata Dal ticket and later they aligned with the Janata Dal (S) to gain majority in the zilla panchayat with the support of the BJP.

When asked whether Mr. Karikunde would be asked to make way for a Janata Dal (S) member to take over the post, Mr. Darshanapur said the immediate concern of the party was to ensure that the post of vice-president was made available to the BJP.

According to the BJP sources, Sridhar Ratnagiri is likely to be elected vice-president of the zilla panchayat shortly. The post of president of the panchayat is reserved for Backward Class (A) and the vice-president is reserved for Scheduled Tribe.
