Rift widening:Leaders of the Uttara Kannada district unit of the BJP addressing presspersons in Karwar on Monday.

The rift between Minister for Fisheries and Science and Technology Anand Asnotikar and Bharatiya Janata Party’s district unit appears to be widening with the local leaders appealing to the party leadership not to give ticket to him in the coming elections.

Prasad Karwarkar, president of Uttara Kannada district unit of the BJP, told presspersons here on Monday that State president and Deputy Chief Minister S. Eshwarappa would visit Yellapur on January 2 to discuss about the probable candidates from the district for the next Assembly elections. He said that the local units of all six Assembly constituencies would give their opinion on the choice of candidates.

Mr. Karwarkar said that the conduct of the MLAs and Ministers from the district and their contribution to the party’s growth would also be discussed. Sixteen persons had submitted their applications for party ticket to contest from the Karwar Assembly constituency and Mr. Asnotikar had not submitted his application to the district unit. He said he was not aware whether Mr. Asnotikar had submitted his application directly to the State unit.

The revolt by Mr. Asnotikar against the party was unpardonable and it would be an important factor in deciding ticket to him in the next elections.

Arun Nadkarni, Karwar BJP block president, said that the participation of Mr. Asnotikar in a function organised by the student wing of the Kannada Makkala Paksha on Saturday in Karwar in which their leader Ashok Kheny was present, was a deliberate move to damage the image of the BJP.

Karwar BJP president Rajesh Nayak, district unit treasurer Jagadeesh Birkodikar, and BJP Yuva Morcha president Santosh Naik were present.
