A group of assailants assaulted him with lethal weapons

Tension prevailed at Surpur in Yadgir district following the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Anand Sowcar at Vallabhbhai Chowk on Saturday evening.

Reports received here said that a group assailants followed Mr. Sowcar (45), a senior leader of the Kuruba community, from Gandhi Chowk and attacked him with lethal weapons at Vallabhai Chowk. Mr. Sowcar died on the way to the Government Hospital in Shahapur.

As the news of his death spread, violence broke out in the town and at least 14 buses were damaged in stone throwing. Some shops were also damaged in stone throwing.

The police resorted to a mild lathicharge to disperse the stone throwing mob in parts of Surpur.

The reports said that tension prevailed in the town as a large number of people gathered at Gandhi Chowk waiting for the body of the slain Kuruba leader to arrive.

They demanded that those involved in the attack be arrested soon.

Superintendent of Police D. Roopa rushed to Surpur with additional police personnel.

Security has been tightened in the town.

Special police teams have been formed to arrest the assailants.
