Vimala T. Vakode and Shanmukappa B. Hagargundigi of the Bharatiya Janata Party were elected president and vice-president, unopposed, of the Gulbarga Taluk Panchayat on Thursday.
This is the first time that the BJP is coming to power in the panchayat. In a house of 26 members, the BJP has a clear majority with 19 members. The Congress, which has five members, and the Janata Dal (S) two, did not field candidates. While the post of the president was reserved for the Backward Classes A category (woman), the vice-president's post was reserved for the general category.
Ms. Vakode, a first-time member of the taluk panchayat, was elected from Sontha constituency, and Mr. Hagargundigi won from the Kawalga B seat.
