Udupi: K. Raghupati Bhat, MLA of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said on Saturday that there was no police failure in preventing the group clashes that occurred at Kaup on March 15.

Addressing presspersons here Mr. Bhat said that the police had controlled the group clashes within one-and-a-half hours in testing conditions. “It was their prompt action which prevented the situation from going out of hand. I congratulate them for it,” he said.

Stones thrown at vehicles from a place of worship had triggered the group clashes. Activists of a community were involved in the stone-throwing act. Superintendent of Police of Udupi district Pravin Pawar suffered a head injury in that act and he had to be admitted to a hospital, he said.

Although the Hindu Samajotsava was held at Mangalore, police personnel had been deployed at all places of worship in the district. The Congress MLAs from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada district were blaming the police and demanding resignation of Home Minister V.S. Acharya because they wanted the votes of a particular community, Mr. Bhat said.
