The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday backed its government’s controversial amendments to the Lokayukta Act which have invited public outcry for some unreasonable provisions.
At a press conference here, party spokesman Narendra Sawaikar justified the “deemed rejection clause” in the amendments which stated that the report of the Lokayukta would be deemed to be rejected if not acted upon by the competent authority within 90 days of its submission.
On the exorbitant fines and penalties and the provision for imprisonment for frivolous and vexatious complaints, Mr. Sawaikar said that the party had a view that the government must take an appropriate decision on this.
To a question, Mr. Sawaikar admitted that the BJP had promised to amend the Lokayukta Act on the lines of the Uttarakhand Bill, but argued that there were not much difference between Goa and Uttarakhand legislations.
