Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a protest here on Wednesday, against the increasing number of rape and sexual harassment cases in the country.

Nearly 30 members participated in the demonstration held outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office here.

They raised slogans against the State and Union governments for their alleged failure in preventing such cases.

Demand

The agitators demanded severe punishment for rapists, besides urging the governments to set up fast-track courts for speedy disposal of cases.

“The governments should provide security for women,” Brinda, a social activist and BJP member, told The Hindu .

A total of 22,172 rapes cases were registered in 2010 and 24,506 cases in 2011 in the country.

But, the conviction rate was very less, BJP Mahila Morcha president J. Sujatha Siddaiah said.

Later, the agitators submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner B.N. Krishnaiah.
