A student of BMS College of Engineering near Basavanagudi, who was celebrating his 21st birthday and the Holi festival with friends, allegedly drowned in the Agara lake on the outskirts of the city on Thursday.

The Ramanagaram police identified the deceased as Ankith Ashok Nayak. The tragedy took place at 1.45 p.m. and the police retrieved the body from the lake at 5 p.m.

Ankith, a resident of Marathahalli, was a first semester student of the college.

While Ankith's father Ashok Nayak is a Deputy Manager at HAL, his mother Jayanthi Ashok works as at the United Bank near Fraser Town.

According to Ramanagaram police, Ankit had left for the lake along with five other engineering students at 8 a.m. on three motorcycles and reached the lake at 11.30 a.m.

“After cutting the cake, they played with colours. Later, all the six went to the lake to clean themselves,” an official attached to the office of the Superintendent of Police (Ramanagaram district) told The Hindu .

Ankit accidentally slipped and fell into the lake. His friends tried to save him but in vain.

His friends alerted the police control room and the rescue squad of the Fire and Emergency Services recovered the body from the lake.

The Ramanagaram district police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating.
