: The twin districts of Bijapur and Bagalkot have got one Minister each.

At the swearing-in ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan in Bangalore on Saturday, M.B. Patil from Babaleshwar constituency in Bijapur district was inducted into the Cabinet, and Umashree, MLA for Terdal constituency in Bagalkot district, was also made Minister.

Interestingly, both MLAs have become Ministers for the first time.

A three-time MLA and former MP, Mr. Patil is also president of the prestigious BLDE Association, which runs various educational institutions, including medical and engineering colleges, in Bijapur city.

An influential Congress leader, Mr. Patil registered his third successive victory in the recent Assembly election, defeating Vijugouda Patil of the Janata Dal (Secular).

With Mr. Patil joining the Cabinet, he is expected to become the district in-charge Minister.

Actor-turned-politician Umashree, who defeated Siddu Savadi of the BJP, is a first-time MLA.

A former MLC, Ms. Umashree has acted in over 400 films and bagged numerous awards, including the prestigious Rajyotsava Award.

Supporters of Mr. Patil celebrated his elevation by bursting crackers and distributing sweets.
