Bhavya Poojary and Vijayalakshmi Shetty of the Bharatiya Janata Party were elected president and vice-president of Mangalore Taluk Panchayat in an election held on Thursday.

Ms. Poojary, a graduate from Besant Women's College, has been elected to the panchayat from Kallamundkur constituency and Mr. Shetty, who has studied up to class 7, is from Ganjimath constituency. The Government had reserved the post of president for a general category woman. The post of vice-president had been reserved for a B category woman from Other Backward Classes.

The Congress candidates, Surekha Chandrahas and Maria Lavina Veigas, who contested for the posts of president and vice-president, lost Thursday's election by one vote.

Mangalore Taluk Panchayat has 37 constituencies of which the BJP had won in 19 constituencies leaving the rest to the Congress.

Ms. Poojary told presspersons that she would work for the development of the taluk in consultation with the party leaders.

Issue

Asked if there was any issue that others had not been able to resolve and she would want to find a solution for it, Ms. Poojary said it was related to allotting title deeds to land holders.

Ms. Shetty is a former president of the Women's Milk Producers Cooperative Sangha, and has been associated with the Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project.
