Bidar: "D.R. Bendre was a scientist and humanist who elevated and educated readers by using philosophy and poetry," Bendre scholar and poet G. Krishnappa said in Bidar on Wednesday.

He was delivering a special lecture on Bendre's life and works at a function organised by the BVB College and the Nrupatunga Kannada Balaga.

Dr. Krishnappa analysed some of Bendre's poems such as Naku Tanti, Buddha, Kanna Kanke and Mallige.

Theme

The resounding theme of his poems was self-realisation of man and his philosophical achievement. This, Bendre had said, could be achieved by a deep love for life and by shedding ego, Dr. Krishnappa said. Mr. Bendre not only sought to understand the writings of Sharanas, but also interpreted their work for the common man, he said. College principal S.V. Panashetty and Balaga president Sidramappa Masimade were present.

The balaga also conducted Bendre poetry recitation competition in the Government High School in Goonalli and at the Datta Giri Maharaj High School in Bidar. Dr. Krishnappa gave away prizes to winners.
