Steps have been taken to set up a packhouse and pre-cooling unit for fruits and vegetables in the district.
Announcing this at the Republic Day celebrations and later speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, Minister for Agriculture and district in-charge Umesh V. Katti said the Karnataka State Agricultural Marketing Board would set up the packhouse and pre-cooling unit in the district, which produces a substantial quantity of vegetables and where fruits like grapes, mangoes, chikoo and banana are cultivated.
The board had proposed to set up these units, for which it had earmarked Rs. 832 lakh. Mr. Katti spoke of the development programmes being implemented by the Government.
Several other institutions and organisations, such as the Rani Channamma University and Visvesvaraya Technological University, celebrated Republic Day by hoisting the national flag.
In the evening, the Department of Kannada and Culture organised cultural programmes by schoolchildren at the Kumar Gandharva Ranga mandira.
The city units of the Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh, Scheduled Castes Federation and other Dalit organisations took out a motorcycle rally to spread awareness on the constitutional rights granted to the citizens of India, particularly the Dalits and other socially and economically deprived sections of society.
