Raghvendra Anavekar, a physically-challenged swimmer from the city, and his coach Umesh Kalghatgi have been selected to the Indian team for the “Danish Open Swimming Competition 2012” for people with disabilities to be held in Esbjerg, Denmark, from Friday to Sunday.

The competition is being organised by Danish Sports Organisation for Disabled. Raghvendra will be participating in four events. Mr. Kalghatgi has been selected as a coach of the Indian team along with R.S. Rajeev.

The other members of the team are Prashant Karmakar and Sharath Gaikwad, physically challenged, and Kanchanmala Pande, visually challenged.

Raghvendra is a member of the Swimmers' Club of Belgaum and Aquarius Swim Club of Belgaum. He is being trained at the Rotary Corporation Sports Academy's Swimming Pool in the city.

He has won 24 medals in international competitions apart from many medals in national-level events. He is supported by LEAD (The Society for the Development of Disabled, Underprivileged, Youth, Children), Belgaum, and Purple Nest, a non-governmental organisation, from Bangalore.
