The Belgaum Chamber of Commerce and Industries has called for Belgaum bandh on on Monday to protest against the alleged assault on its president Basavaraj Javali on April 30 by Abhay Patil, MLA of the BJP. It may be recalled here that Mr. Javali registered a complaint with the Market Police Station alleging Mr. Patil and his brother Santosh Patil for allegedly “abusing, humiliating and beating” him on April 30 over a developmental work on industrial estate in Machche. Mr. Javali told mediapersons here on Sunday that 58 trade and industrial organisations have promised their support to the protest.

He urged the people to support their bandh as part of which a rally would be taken out.

District president of the Janata Dal (Secular) Basavaraj Matagar has condemned the alleged assault on Mr. Javali and criticised Mr. Patil for it. Demanding Mr. Patil's resignation, Mr. Matagar said the JD (S) would support the bandh. — Staff Correspondent
