Congress leader and sitting president of the Belgaum Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Parsurahm Devappa Kurangi was murdered, allegedly by his two half brothers here on Thursday.

The accused, Ashok Devappa Kurangi and Indrajit Kurangi, surrendered at the APMC police station.

The police said the motive was a dispute over sharing compensation for family property that had been acquired by the Government for construction of the Suvarna Soudha at Halga-Bastwad on the outskirts of the city. The victim had got about Rs. 36 lakh as compensation for the land acquired but had refused to share this with his halfbrothers.

The accused attacked Mr. Kurangi and female members of the family with chilli powder, before killing him at his Shahunagar house, they said
