MANGALORE: Members of the Beedi Workers’ Protection Forum will stage a protest in front of the office of the Assistant Labour Commissioner at Bendoorwell here on July 27 against the managements of beedi companies for violating an agreement signed on January 31, Hemavathi P., chief convenor of the forum, said on Friday. According to the agreement, the managements were supposed to pay Rs. 4,500 to workers as arrears of dearness allowance which had been pending for the past 10 years. They had agreed to pay it by June 30.

But payments had not been made. There were instances where the companies had paid Rs. 1,000 to workers and had obtained signatures for Rs. 4,500, she said. Some workers had accepted Rs. 1,000 fearing that they might not get any money at all.
