Manish Moudgil, who took charge as Deputy Commissioner on Thursday, warned officials and staff engaged in election duties against negligence and dereliction of duty.

At a meeting with senior officials engaged in election work, Mr. Moudgil advised them to enforce discipline in administration and told them not to yield to influence or pressure. Officers will need to be vigilant till May 5, when the elections to the Assembly will be held, he said.

As the model code of conduct was put in place on March 20, all preparations should be complete on time to ensure that people could exercise their franchise in a free and fair atmosphere, Mr. Moudgil said. Sector-wise official teams will be set up to keep a close watch on electioneering. A helpline for every Assembly constituency in the district has already been opened, he added.

He hinted that he would visit any of these centres at any time, and take action against the tahsildar concerned if he did not find staff on duty. He told officials not to hesitate to call him even late in the night, if any problems arose. Additional Deputy Commissioner Praveen Kumar and Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officers from all the 18 Assembly segments in the district were present.
