The Cubbon Park police arrested Bruhut Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) councillor Shakeel Ahmed and four of his friends on charges of attempting to kill a bar owner on Church Street.

Police said Ahmed, along with his friends, went to the bar 10 minutes before closing time on Tuesday and demanded liquor. Bar owner Nayeem refused citing police instructions to strictly stop serving liquor after 11.30 p.m. Subsequently, Ahmed and his associates picked up a quarrel with the victim and allegedly stabbed him.

Mr. Nayeem who was treated in a hospital, filed a complaint under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code.

The other accused are Ehsaan, Qadir, Salman and Fairoz.

Police said that Ahmed, Congress councillor of Bharathinagar ward, is a history-sheeter facing charges of murder, kidnapping and other criminal activities.
