Friends of Basketball (FOB), an association of basketball players and supporters, petitioned the Secretary of the Goa Olympic Association on Tuesday, thanking it for its initiative in bringing the Goa Basketball Association (GBA) back on track.
FOB has been at loggerheads with the GBA for what it describes as the latter’s undemocratic functioning. Last week, the association held a protest accusing the GBA of harming the interests of the game and petitioned the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) to act against erring officials of the GBA and to stop its funding till it holds elections.
Lack of support
In its petition, copies of which have been marked to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and officials of the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) and SAG, FOB secretary Sandeep Heble noted that the issue surfaced because the previous committee lacked the support of the basketball fraternity.
The petition expressed happiness over the moves initiated by the BFI to resolve the crisis, due to which a new committee would soon be appointed to take over the association.
“We will be happy if the new committee can be elected or nominated through a proper process, by bringing together the various clubs that have been active in the promotion of basketball in the State,” said the petition. It cautioned the BFI against selecting candidates based on recommendations.
“The basketball fraternity has suffered due to the lack of democracy in the GBA. With the BFI giving its nod, this is a golden opportunity to fix things,” the petition read.
